Frequently asked questions.

  • What is Bookmark-Local and what can I use it for?

You can find anything on the internet but not always in the same place. We have designed this site to supply answers to those common questions about the area you live in. Where is the nearest Doctor? Is there a Library? Do we have a Citizens Advice bureau or a Park?

  • Why is Post Code search slower?
The USA has 42,000 Post Codes. Here in the UK we have 1,700,000. Yes, that's one million, seven hundred thousand. Our largest search terms have around 22,000 listings. That means the Post Code search has to search 80 times more information. If you wish to speed your searches up then use Towns and Counties. Return to top

  • What is the Name search box used for? Do I have to put my own name in it?

No, it is not for your own name. The Name box is used for entering the names of locations you already know such as; 'Alton Towers' or 'Luton Airport'.

  • Can I only search from my local area? What if I'm going to stay or move somewhere new?

This is one of the main purposes of Bookmark-Local. It was designed to be used as a tool for house hunters, holiday makers and temporary visitors to an area allowing them to find essential and emergency services in an area that was unfamiliar to them. For people already living in an area that they know well it can still provide new information about services they might never have used before.

  • I can't find what I'm looking for? There seems to be some content missing.

This site has an enormous amount of content but there is still more being compiled every day. We are uploading each category count by county so it is possible your county is not finished yet. This is frustrating for us but as nearly 95% of the counties are already compiled it will not be long before all 20 plus categories are running. Please bear with us.

  • Why has my search box has stopped working? It was OK a few minutes ago.

We offer a free service and would like you to use the site as much as possible. We do have a maximum number of searches programmed in to stop piracy of our material. We are constantly monitoring the number of views we get and will hopefully get a setting on the limiter that will allow you to search without being inconvenienced. The search will reset itself after a certain number of minutes.

  • You have a location missing?

We know there are 205 dentists in Bedfordshire or rather, there were when we compiled the database in 2011. There could now be more or maybe less. The same goes for all of our other categories. We have been compiling this site for 18 months and we are certain that we have missed several locations. There is an add location link at the top of the search page where you can add any that you are certain we have missed. They will not show up until we verify them. If you know of a location that does not exist any more please fill in the form on the 'Remove' page and we will delete it from the database.

  • I can't seem to find Scotland and Wales?

We will not be releasing Scotland and Wales until next year. However, the Post Code information for those countries has been added so you can use the search function if you live there.

  • Why do you have separate search boxes? Why not just use one list.
Easy answer to that came from our location script experts. 200,000 listings x 1,500,000 post codes would mean the script would have to do 300 billion calculations for every search and that might just slow it down a little bit! Return to top

  • Can I search for businesses here? Would I find a plumber or garage or estate agent?
We have no plans to list businesses now or in the future other than attractions such as Theme parks and Museums etc. Businesses can place adverts on our site though. Return to top

  • Is Bookmark-Local just for boring information? Are you adding anything else?

The simple answer is that information is only boring when you don't need it. Having said that, we're not boring people and so we've added extra content to make it fun. We now have events pages in each town where you can advertise your own events free of charge, a free index of all sports clubs - societies - social clubs etc, a guide to each area, a food & drinks section for each area plus an independent county blog page where you can have you own say about local issues.

  • Do you have sponsored listings? Are there any paid listings?

Yes and no. We use preferential listings to help you find such locations as major airports. They are not paid for, we are just trying to make places easier for you to find. Apart from that we do not use them. We have limited the number of results on each page so you can view easily on mobile phones, sponsored results would just make it harder to find the information you are looking for.

  • Can we advertise on Bookmark-Local? How would that work?

Yes. We do need to earn some revenue. We control all of the advertising ourselves and can target by area. We have two types of adverts, paid and pay-per-click. Both types are very reasonably priced.

  • Where are the paid adverts? Are they on every page? Can anybody advertise?
The paid adverts are only for businesses in the food and drinks industry. They are found on the Food & Drink sections of the Town pages and can be used by Public Houses, Cafes, Restaurants, Tea Shops, Take Aways - indeed, any business that serves food or drink. Return to top

  • Where are the pay per click adverts? Are these supplied by Google? Are they the same as Google ads?
All advertising apart from the Food & Drinks pages is pay-per-click. Pay-per-click means exactly that - when a customer clicks on your advert you pay for that visitor at a value you set yourself. It can be as low as 2p per click. These adverts are served from our own servers and are not supplied by Google. If you wish to advertise using our pay-per-click system further details can be found on our advertise page or try building an advert free of charge here. Return to top
